What We Did For Hurricane Katrina
By Caitlin

First of all, if you EVER are in the path of a hurricane you should try and leave and go
somewhere the hurricane is not going to go. That is the ONLY way you will know that you
won't get hurt..

If you cannot leave for some reason than there are many things you should do. This is
step by step what our family did for Hurricane Katrina..

1. We went to the store (stores like the Dollar Tree or any stores where everythings a
dollar is a good place to go because you can get alot of stuff for cheap) and this is what
we bought:
*Lots of batteries
*Lots of food we can eat without power (food that doesn't have to be cold, or warmed up
like chips)
*Lots of water
*Ice
*Cooler for the ice
*Candles
*Lighter (make sure your parents buy this, for the candles, do NOT play with these, you
can hurt yourself)
*At least two flashlights
*Battery powered TV that picks up local news channels
*Plenty of food for the dogs and cat and other animals
*Toilet paper
*Bugspray
*Make sure your parents get FULL tanks of gas

That about covers what we got, now onto the next steps for preparing...

2. Get your parents to get some plywood and board up your windows. Do not crack the
windows during a hurricane to "relieve pressure". I've heard its a myth, and that it could
make things worse.

3. Turn the airconditioning down.. Make the house as cold as possible because when
the power goes out it gets hot fast.

4. Before the hurricane make sure the animals have had plenty of potty breaks.

5. Make sure you've gotten up most of the loose items outside and brought them inside
because they could fly around during the hurricane.

6. Take a bath and brush your teeth and all that stuff BEFORE the hurricane because
the power might go out.

7. Get your parents to park the car/cars away from tree and if they can put a car cover
on them..

8. I almost forgot about this one, if you have a digital camera try to take pictures of the
house and cars with the dates on them from all angles. This way, if something happens
to them, you can show the insurance company the pictures with the dates so they can
know that the hurricane did damage your property or your cars.

What we did DURING Hurricane Katrina:

1. Stayed away from all windows.
2. Lit candles when it started to get dark (the power could go out at anytime)
3. As soon as the power did go out we then filled the cooler with ice and put drinks and
some food in there. You don't want to do this until you have to because you want the ice
to last as long as possible.
4. Kept updated by our little TV but did not leave it on for long periods of time because
you want the batteries to last long.
5. Used the flashlights only when needed, again to keep the batteries alive for as long
as possible.

Thats about all I can think of right now.. Might add more later on.. Going to post some
pictures in a second of what the hurricane did to Fairhope.
