What Is Your Dog Eating?
Some popular ingredients in higher quality commercial dog foods are also fed by people
who prepare their own dog menus. Just what is your dog eating?

Alfalfa
The green leaves of the alfalfa plant are a source of chlorophyll and minerals such as
calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese, phosphorus, iron, and zinc. It also contains
Vitamin A (Beta Carotene), Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Niacin, Biotin, Choline, Pantothenic
acid, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin E (Tocopherols), and Vitamin K.

Antioxidants
Antioxidants are compounds that neutralize free radicals. Dogs naturally produce some
antioxidant Vitamin C. They also need the  antioxidants Vitamin E, Beta Carotene, and the
trace mineral Selenium. Antioxidants  are found in fresh fruits (carrots, apples, peaches,
pears)  and vegetables (celery). Red grape seed extract (never feed grapes to your dog)
supplies proanthocyanidins.

Vitamin E
Vitamin E promotes healing, aids in protecting against neurological and heart diseases,
and strengthens the immune system response.

Selenium
Selenium a trace mineral  works with Vitamin E to helf defend the cells from damage.

Beta-Carotene
Beta-Carotene strengthens the immune system and fights diseases..

Apples
Apples provide  vitamins and minerals including Vitamin C, Potassium, Calcium,
Magnesium, and Folate which help protect cells and keep them healthy.

Bacteria Cultures
Cooking destroys the live  microorganisms in food. Dogs fed kibble need to be
supplemented with some type of additive such as plain unflavored yogurt or one of the
many products available for this. .

Brewer’s Dried Yeast
A source of  amino acid balanced protein and natural minerals and vitamins, especially B
Complex Vitamins (except B12). It assists the digestive system work at a higher efficiency.
Caution, some dogs are allergic to Brewer's Dried Yeast.

Brown Rice
A natural whole grain which is a source of fiber and Vitamin B. If a grain is feed to your dog
this is one of the few that is digestible to your dog. Many dogs do not do well on a grain
diet.

Carrots
Carrots are an excellent source of beta-carotene (Vitamin A) a powerful antioxidant and
Vitamins C, D, E, and K, Riboflavin, Niacin, Calcium, Potassium, Phosphorus, Sodium, and
Iron.

Celery
Celery is a soruce of  beneficial fiber,  Calcium and Potassium,  Vitamins A and C, and the
antioxidants Lutein and Zeaxanthin.

Chicken
Chicken  is a high quality source of protein and  Omega-6 fatty acids. It is highly digestible
by dogs.

Dried Beet Pulp
Beet Pulp is what is left  after the natural sugar is extracted from  sugar beets. Beet pulp is
added to many higher end kibbles or can be given to dogs in supplements. It is a source of
soluble fiber and helps to maintain a healthy digestive tract and promote normal firm stools.

Eggs
Eggs are a major help in planning a balanced diet. They are known to be  a complete
protein source providing essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals (Vitamins A, B, E, K,
Biotin, and Sulfur), and  Omega-6. Egg shells are a good source of calcium.

Fish
Excellent Protein Source and also Omega-3 fatty acids. White fish is a top choice for dogs
with a sensitive stomach or problems with digestion.

Flax Seed Meal/Oil
A rich source of highly digestible protein, essential amino acids, fiber, antioxidant lignans,  
Omega-3 fatty acids,, Vitamins E, B6, Folic Acid, Riboflavin, Niacin, and the minerals
Potassium, Calcium and Phosphorus.

Green Beans
Vit. A, C, calcium, and iron. If using canned pour into colander and drain well. Beans
should be chopped finely and serve raw to retain vitamines and other nutrients..

Sweet Potatoes
They provide potassium and magnesium and are  a good source of Vitamins A and C.

Spinach
Feed only in small amounts on occassion
A rich source of Beta Carotene, Lutein, Folate, Vitamin K, Magnesium, Iron and
Manganese.
