| Yes, when meeting a new dog you must always ask the owner first. Only ask if the dog is on a leash. Then walk slowly and quietly up to the dog and stop a short distance away. If the dog begins barking or trying to get away from you do not continue. Just stop, tell the owner thank you anyway, and walk slowly away. Stand a little sideways to the dog and do not look it in the eye. Look somewhere else on the dog's head. Hold one arm down to your side and raise the other up towards the dog. Remember make a fist with fingers down. The owner should have the dog on a sit and then let the dog stretch over to sniff. If the dog wants to make friends then you can reach over and give a gentle scratch under the chin. |
